Educational institutions in Mizoram to reopen today

AIZAWL, Jan 5 - Though most shops and business establishments in Mizoram reopened today after extended Christmas and New Year celebrations, the streets here still wore a deserted look as most people remained indoors.

There were not many customers and visitors at government offices, banks and private offices on Saturday. However, educational institutions and offices of political parties will reopen on Monday.

Meanwhile, a heavy downpour since Friday morning has prevented people from venturing out. It may be mentioned here that the New Year festivities ended on Thursday in most localities here and in the adjoining villages with grand community feasts.

Despite restrictions, people rang in the New Year by setting off firecrackers which lit up the skies on the midnight of December 31. No one was arrested for the revelry.

Sources said there was much carousing too despite the enactment of the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition) Bill, 2019, which was passed in the State Assembly in March last year. The new Act, which came into force in May, 2019, bans the sale, manufacture, import and consumption of alcohol in Mizoram except in the three autonomous council areas in the southern part of the State.
