Dumping of wastes in Meghalaya river banned

SHILLONG, April 22 - Following reports of pollution stemming from human activity along the banks of Myntdu river in West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, the district administration has clamped down on such activities in an effort to protect the water body.

Taking cognisance of the problem, District Magistrate of West Jaintia Hills has issued an order under Section 144 CrPC prohibiting dumping of waste material, solid or liquid, etc., in Myntdu river. Further discharge in any form from stone quarries, garage, workshops, residential houses, localities, private and public enterprises, toilets, etc., should not be allowed to flow directly to the Myntdu river, the order said.

The District Magistrate has also ordered for immediate stoppage of quarries from upstream of Myntdu river.
