Drug worth Rs 2.85 cr seized in Manipur

IMPHAL, Oct 14 - The Tengnoupal Battalion of Assam Rifles seized a huge cache of brown sugar, worth Rs 2.85 crores on Imphal-Moreh National Highway (NH 102) on Saturday, according to a press release issued by Assam Rifles (South).

The Tengnoupal Battalion and DRI seized contraband drugs from a car coming from Moreh at Permanent Vehicle Check Post, at Khudengthabi yesterday,� the release added.

�During the search, brown sugar weighing approximately 714 grams in 50 packets concealed inside the boot space of the car was found.�

Stating that the assessed market value of the seized contraband is approximately Rs 2.85 crore, the release added that the car driver Jangkomang Haokip, a resident of Moreh was taken into custody. The seized items and the apprehendee were handed over to DRI at Imphal.

Ongoing illegal drug trade are a major cause of concern for Manipur, it added. Since March last, the 26 Sector Assam Rifles has seized contraband drugs worth Rs 70.09 crore.

Shutdown: CorCom, a Co-ordination Committee of a group of insurgent organisations in Manipur has called a 18-hour Statewide total shut down from midnight of October 15 to observe �National Black Day�, reports said.
