Digboi Youth Cong leader accused of blackmail

DIBRUGARH, July 1 - One Tamal Dutta was arrested in connection with Dibrugarh PS case No. 490/16 u/s 420, 387 and 120 (B) IPC pertaining to blackmailing and extortion.

Tamal Dutta was arrested from the office of Magnum Beverages & Foods Private Limited at Lachitnagar here on Wednesday when he came to collect the demanded money at the behest of Digboi Youth Congress president Shivnath Chetia, CR Boro, Officer in-Charge of Dibrugarh Police Station said.

Gautam Gogoi, Public Relations Officer of the Bokel-based Magnum Beverages & Foods Private Limited told newsmen yesterday that the Company officials were threatened and harassed by Shivnath Chetia since the past several months.

�Shivnath Chetia had accused us of producing unhealthy packaged drinking water bottles, a sample of which he claimed was found with unwanted substance. He was making repeated calls and sending texts through SMS and WhatsApp from one particular phone number that he would make public the adulterated beverages if the Company did not give in to his monetary demand,� he said.

The PRO said that adulteration was not possible without tampering the seal of the bottles. We suspected foul play by Shivnath Chetia, so that he could find a reason to extract money from the Company. We had also intimated the matter to the Food Safety Officer, and Office of the Joint Director of Health Services here, that some people were trying to pollute the packaged drinking water bottles of the Company by breaking the seal and putting inside some unhygienic substance and resealing it for some malicious and ill motive, he said.
