Dhubri Police busts illegal gambling dens

DHUBRI, Oct 30 - In a bid to curb anti-social activities, the police all over Dhubri district is busy in busting illegal gambling spots since the last few days.

As per information available, since Tuesday last, police all over the district have busted several illegal gambling dens. Police on Saturday night raided and cleared 26 gambling spots and picked up 31 people, besides arresting four others.

Sources said that under Gauripur Police Station, seven raids were conducted, while 12 raids were conducted in Golakganj area. Similarly, six raids were conducted at Agomoni area, five at Tamarhat area and seven in Sapatgram area. Further, under Bilasipara and Chapar Police Station, 20 and nine such raids were conducted till Saturday night.

While talking to this Correspondent, the officer in�charge of Dhubri Police Station, Pradip Kumar Das said that such gambling dens usually operate during the festive season and often ends in dispute and violence. �Many makeshift gambling dens are set up during this season every year especially in the slum areas of the town. These gamblers also create public nuisance,� the OC added.

However, Rustom Raj Barman and Bhabanidhar Sharma, OC of Golakganj and Bilasipara opined that these gamblers mostly hail from poor families.

�During most of the raids, we often seen that the gamblers manage to escape as soon as we arrive as they are forewarned by their colleagues,� said Barman.

Meanwhile, Sharma informed that they had been frequently carrying out such raids in Bilasipara town.
