HAILAKANDI, July 24 - The members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha of Hailakandi district have demanded the immediate restoration of the NH 37 in the Panchgram area for vehicular traffic. A delegation of the Morcha on Thursday met the Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi and handed over a memorandum, warning of a vigorous agitation if the road is not restored within the next 15 days.

About a 1 km stretch of the NH 37 in the Panchgram area of Hailakandi district has been washed away due to the severe erosion caused by the Barak river. The NH 37 connects the Barak Valley with the rest of the nation. The Karimganj district is totally dependent on this road for connectivity with Silchar. The people are now using alternative village roads. The Cachar Paper Mill authorities of the Hindustan Paper Corporation have opened the road inside the mill, but this is not sufficient for heavy vehicular traffic. A rice-laden truck was washed away on Wednesday evening when it tried to cross the submerged road.

The members of the delegation apprised the Hailakandi DC of the seriousness of the problem and urged him to intervene immediately for the respite of the people. The delegation was led by the president of the BJPs Hailakandi district committee, Kshitish Ranjan Paul, the Yuva Morcha president and general secretary, Suraj Sen and Saurav Sarma Mazumdar respectively, Swapan Paul, Dayal Mahanta, Dipak Chandra, Sidhartha Paul, Pradip Deb, Pritwish Kanti Das and others.
