GUWAHATI, Nov 16 On the occasion of the National Press Day on Sunday, the Assam Press Correspondents Union demanded for a powerful media council in India comprising both the print and the electronic media, which will work as a watchdog to ensure the press/media freedom as well as quality journalism in the country.

The Union observed the occasion with a day-long programme at the auditorium of the Assam Olympic Association at the Nehru Stadium here.

The Union also insisted for a government job for a family member of those journalists killed in Assam since 1999 by extremists and miscreants.

The Union felicitated five senior journalists on the occasion.
