GUWAHATI, Oct 6 - City-based conservation body Heritage Conservation Society of Assam (HeCSA) today took up the matter of defacing the Ramkinkar Baij-built bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi, located atop the Sarania Hillock, by applying a coat of silver enamel paint on it, with the Kamrup (Metro) district administration. It urged the district administration to initiate urgent steps to restore the original bronze colour of the statue.

HeCSA secretary Jayanta Sarma told this newspaper that the issue of applying enamel paint on the statue, which has by now attained an iconic status because of its outstanding style and the rank of its creator Ramkinkar Baij, the father of modern Indian sculpture, has now been taken seriously by the district administration.

Sarma said a memorandum was submitted to the district administration in this regard.

It is expected that an official decision would soon be made public by the district administration on restoration of the original bronze colour of the statue, he added.
