Darrang DEEO gets 4-year RI

GUWAHATI, Dec 30 - The court of Special Judge, Assam, sentenced District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO), Darrang, Phulendra Kalita to undergo rigorous imprisonment for four years in a corruption case.

Kalita was arrested by the vigilance sleuths in 2016 on charges of demanding illegal gratification from a contractor for allotment of works for repairing/renovation of schools under Axom Sarba Siksha Abhiyan Mission.

Special Judge, Assam, Dipak Thakuria convicted Kalita under Sections 7 and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The officers of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption laid a trap and arrested the accused official while he was receiving bribe from contactor Chabin Deka on June 27, 2016. The trap was laid on basis of a complaint lodged by Deka.

Special Public Prosecutor Manash Haloi appeared for the prosecution and senior counsel Ziaul Kamar argued on behalf of the accused. The prosecution examined 16 witnesses in order to bring home the charges against the accused during the trial of this case.
