GUWAHATI, Jan 12 - Students of Cotton University on Sunday launched a door-to-door campaign to sensitise the public about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
As part of the campaign, the students prepared leaflets and distributed them among the public from rural pockets of the state. We printed around one lakh leaflets for this campaign. We will also reach out through WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms. The leaflets, written in Assamese, carry the message why as an individual we should oppose the CAA and the false promises of the present government, Cotton University Students Unions former general secretary Pranjal Kalita said.
It is an easy task for us to reach each and every person of the state, as the university caters to students from every nook and corner of the state. The students will distribute leaflets in their localities and also ask people to forward it to another five and more people, he added.
Students of the premier educational institution have been vehemently opposing the Act since its inception. On Saturday, the students took out a torchlight rally and displayed a collection of photographs on the university premises from the days of the protests against the controversial Act.
Hirakjyoti Bora, a student, said, First, the Act violates the Constitution, secondly it violates the Assam Accord and also posses a threat to our language, culture and identity. We are continuously opposing it and we will not stop our protest. We will take every possible measure to make the public aware to form a united force against the Act.
We also appeal to the people not to vote for the BJP in the 2021 Assembly elections. Destroying our hopes, the government imposed the Act on us which threatens our identity. We have to ensure that the BJP doesnt return to power in the next election, he added.
The students through the leaflets also demanded scrapping of the CAA and release of those arrested during the protest, including KMSS leaders Akhil Gogoi and Bitu Sonowal.
