GOALPARA, Jan 13 - Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka who was watching the evening show of Bordoichila theatre along with her teenage daughter at the Goalpara College playground on Saturday was misbehaved with by two policemen allegedly in an inebriated condition, who also intimidated her by sneering at her and threatening her. Deka had gone to watch the show without her security personnel.

In a complaint against the police personnel to the officer in charge, Goalpara Sadar Police Station, Deputy Commissioner Varnali Deka mentioned that after she and her daughter had settled down to watch the play, one of the police personnel came to the place where she was seated and stamped on her feet causing bruises. The matter was immediately reported to the OC, Goalpara Sadar Police Station but it is a matter of discomfiture as to why no action or intimation was given to the Deputy Commissioner in this regard. Sources identified the two offenders as Kalyan Roy and Johirul Islam, who said they were PSOs of the son of Dipul Tamuly, the OC of Goalpara Sadar Police Station.

DC Varnali Deka said that it is a matter of grave concern that the police who are entrusted with the task of enforcing law and order, themselves become perpetrators and are unable to protect a lady, who is also the deputy commissioner of the district. It is quite disquieting to see such brazen behaviour, open indiscipline and public drunkenness including threatening gestures amounting to assault, she added. Deka also mentioned that there is glaring lacunae in policing in the district.

Meanwhile, many organisations and members of the civil society have come out openly in support of the Deputy Commissioner and all of them have condemned the incident, including the AASUs Goalpara unit, Goalpara Zilla Sahitya Sabha, Citizens Forum Goalpara and the Goria Moria Desi Jatiya Parishad.
