Contributions of Prof Umesh Goswami recalled

JALUKBARI, June 26 - The first Prof Umesh Chandra Goswami Memorial Lecture was organised on Saturday in the Phanidhar Datta Seminar Hall, Gauhati University, on his first death anniversary.

Dr Syamal Roy, a biologist of international repute and Vice-Chancellor of the Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University, West Bengal, presented the memorial lecture on �Arts meet Science: Surrealistic thoughts in infectious diseases�.

The programme started with an invocation by prominent vocalist and Professor of Pachim Guwahati Mahavidyalaya Dr Bijoylakshmi Das. Dr Balendra Kumar Das, president of the organising committee welcomed the august gathering.

Inaugurating the memorial lecture, GU Vice-Chancellor Dr Mridul Hazarika highlighted the immense contributions of Prof Goswami towards the Department of Zoology of the university and society as a whole.

Prof Smriti Kumar Sarkar, Vice-Chancellor of Burdwan University, West Bengal and an eminent social scientist, was the chief guest. While paying tribute to Prof Goswami he narrated many important contributions made by him.

Dr Anil Kr Goswami, retired principal of Cotton College, former director of ASTEC and elder brother of the late Prof Goswami, released the commemorative volume on him.

Dr Namita Sarmah, editor of the commemorative volume, talked about the life and works of late Prof Goswami. The meeting was attended by a large gathering and many prominent personalities were also present.

Prof Jogen Chandra Kalita, general secretary of the organising committee offered the vote of thanks.
