GUWAHATI, June 24 - Players in the domestic circuit must perform consistently to draw attention of the national selectors in order to make it to the senior national side, said former Team India pacer Venkatesh Prasad.
Prasad and former left arm spinner of the Indian team Sunil Joshi, who are officials of the Canara Bank, were in the city on official duty.
The lanky medium pacer, familiar for his lethal swing and the Pakistani wicket of Amir Sohail in the 1996 World Cup quarterfinal, Prasad said it was good that Assam reached semifinal of the last Ranji Trophy season and hoped that the team will be able to maintain the same form this year too. On Krishna Das he said, he might be a useful bowler with 50 Ranji wickets in a season, but has to continue his form for next couple of seasons so that selectors call him up for the national team.
He, however, revealed that the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) should consider in developing the infrastructure and facilitate the youngsters to practice in a world class environment.
He lauded BCCIs decision to concentrate on the Northeastern region and said as there are enough sporting talents in this part of the country, with some effort this region may emerge as a cricketing force in the near future.
The former India players also met the ACA president and Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and discussed on cricket for some time. Prasad said, the ACA president is very much interested in developing the game in the State and if the whole team works sincerely then Assam will definitely be able to produce quality players in a short span of time.
