SHILLONG, Feb 25 - The Congress has accused the NPP-led coalition Government in Meghalaya of having a malafide and criminal intent in filing a petition against the Lokayukta order for a CBI probe into the illegal transportation of coal in the State.

Leader of Opposition and Congress MLA Mukul Sangma today questioned the Government for challenging the Lokayuktas order, stating its only purpose is to stop investigation into the issue so that evidence could be destroyed. He alleged that the Lokayuktas role in fighting corruption is being diluted by the present Government through such petitions.

What is the reason and what is the intent behind challenging the order of the Lokayukta before the High Court, Sangma asked.

The Leader of Opposition said the Congress party would not let such corruption in the State to go on. Further alleging that the Government is trying to protect a cartel involved in illegal coal transportation, Sangma said this is being done to prevent an independent probe as sought by the Lokayukta.
