Complaint lodged over custodial violence

GUWAHATI, June 17 - A complaint has been lodged with the Guwahati Police Commissioner over a reported incident of custodial violence at Gorchuk Police Station recently.

According to the complaint, one Krishna Mandal (43) was arrested by Gorchuk police on May 31 in connection with a car theft case at a workshop he is employed, on the basis of �mere suspicion�.

He was allegedly tortured physically at the police station, following which his health deteriorated and eventually he had to be admitted to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

�We were told by doctors that he has sustained serious injuries to the head. He is on ventilation and his chances of survival are very thin,� advocate Saurabh Nag, who is pursuing the case with the human rights commission and police accountability commission, said.

In a written representation to the Police Commissioner, the victim�s brother Gopal Mandal has sought stringent action against the police personnel involved as well as compensation to the family for the loss and mental agony.
