CM ridicules plebiscite demand

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, Oct 22 Ridiculing the demand for a plebiscite for Assams independence by ULFA C-in-C Paresh Baruah, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the outfit was uttering nonsense after facing rejection by the people.

The people of Assam have consistently been exhibiting their allegiance to the Constitution of India by widely participating in elections. Very few people such as those still remaining with the ULFA might want secession but by and large the overwhelming majority wants to be a part of India, Gogoi said at a press conference.

Gogoi also dared the ULFA supremo to join the mainstream and take part in the electoral process and prove peoples support for him.

Let Paresh Baruah participate in polls and assert his claim regarding support of the masses. I will seek amnesty for him from the Government of India for facilitating this if he wants to join the mainstream, he said.
