CM promises stern action

NEW DELHI, Aug 5 - Condemning the terror attack in Kokrajhar, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today directed the DGP and State Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to rush to the spot.

�We express our grave sorrow. We strongly condemn the incident and express our deep condolences to the families of those killed... We have directed Assam Police to take strong action against those who indulged in the killing,� he said.

�We have offered compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those who were killed and Rs 1 lakh to those injured and Rs 20,000 to those who sustained minor injuries in the incident,� he added.

�Already, Prime Minister. Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to me over telephone regarding today�s incident and both the leaders expressed their condolence to the families of those who were killed,� he said.

The Prime Minister later tweeted that the Home Ministry is in touch with the Assam Government and is monitoring the situation closely. �Saddened by the attack in Kokrajhar. We strongly condemn it. Thoughts & prayers with the bereaved families & those injured,� the Prime Minister said.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister rushed National Security Adviser Ajit Doval to meet Sonowal at his house. The NSA held discussions for over 15 minutes.

�We have taken precautionary measures from our side and we are committed to fight against extremism and it is our first priority to safeguard life and property of the people. We will carry our responsibility,� said Sonowal.

Asked whether NDFB(S) was involved, the Chief Minister said that investigations were on to find out the details. �The DGP and senior officials would inquire into the incident,� he said.

Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi strongly condemned the militant attack and extended her condolences to the families of the thirteen innocent victims.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi tweeted that news of the terror attack in Kokrajhar, extremely worrying. �My thoughts & prayers are with the families of the victims.�
