GUWAHATI, June 10 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today telephoned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and apprised him of the latest developments regarding the Baghjan oil well explosion incident. The Prime Minister, according to an official statement, has assured all help to the people in the affected area.
The statement also said that the Chief Minister had spoken to Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan yesterday after receiving information about the explosion and the resultant fire in the area while also holding a video conference with Pradhan, officials of the Petroleum Ministry and the foreign experts who have come from Singapore to cap the blazing well.
Sonowal informed the Prime Minister that Industries and Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, who is in Tinsukia, would hold meetings with district administration, DG of Assam Police, CMD and other top officials of OIL along with representatives of various local organisations. Stating that the intensity of fire has decreased since yesterday, Sonowal said the foreign experts have expressed optimism that the fire would be controlled soon.
Sonowal also talked with Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah yesterday and requested them to keep air and ground forces ready for carrying out relief and rescue operations for the affected people. He also apprised Union ministers Dr Jitender Singh and Kiren Rijiju about the latest developments.
Sonowal also extended his condolence over the death of two OIL employees working at the oil well site and said they both made supreme sacrifice for the greater interest of the society. He also urged Pradhan to offer employment to one family member each of both the deceased apart from providing adequate compensation.
The Chief Minister has also directed the district administration for completing the last rites of both the deceased � Durlov Gogoi and Tikheswar Gohain � with state honours.
