SILCHAR, July 5 - At a time when religious minorities are being slaughtered by terrorist outfits in Bangladesh, disciples of Hindu religious preacher Sri Swarupananda Paramhansadev of the Akhanda Mandali Sangathan are spreading the message of peace and brotherhood in Silchar.

As a part of their community service programme, a function was organised at the Ajachack Ashram to distribute clothes to over 100 people belonging to the Islamic faith ahead of the festival of Id-ul-Fitre. The speakers at the function condemned the brutal killing of Hindus by religious fanatics in the neighbouring country.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Dilip Chandra Nath, Vice-Chancellor of Assam University at Silchar said, the initiative deserves praise. The ideals of Sri Swarupananda are best reflected through such a noble gesture by his disciples.

Noted journalist Taimur Raja Choudhury was of the view that the steps taken by the followers of Sri Swarupananda by disseminating the message of communal harmony was the need of the hour, something which the Muslims could have also initiated. I express my gratitude towards the intent of the programme and invite all to join the Id celebrations which would foster peace and brotherhood in the society.

Badrul Islam Barlaskar of Jamia Islamia Educational Institute at Topkhana here also attended the function.
