GUWAHATI, Oct 14 - �I personally think cinema does not depend on literature. But there is a stigma among some people that without literature, cinema does not exist. Such stigma takes birth due to lack of proper knowledge about the medium of cinema,� said eminent filmmaker and writer Buddhadeb Dasgupta while delivering a lecture on �Literature and Cinema� as part of the silver jubilee celebration of the Assamese literary monthly Gariyoshi at Gauhati Town Club here today.
Citing examples of various films based on literary works of William Shakespeare, the national award-winning director said, �Filmmakers world over have made movies based on various plays of Shakespeare. But interestingly, all these films carry different expressions. It is because of the thought process of the director.�
Marking cinema as a completely independent medium, Dasgupta said, �Some literary work may inspire a filmmaker. But he should not attempt to change a literary work completely on celluloid. He or she must employ the creativity of the filmmaker.� The story of a cinema might be inspired from any literary work or from a newspaper reporting, he said, adding, there are some beautiful films based on newspaper reports. �But in the making process, the filmmaker should get the liberty to tell the story in his or her own style,� he added.
Dasgupta also pointed out that cinema and literature inspire each other in different contexts. But the director must identify with the idea of the film he or she is making, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, poet and former Assam DGP Harekrishna Deka marked the 25-year-long journey of Gariyoshi as a big event of the State. �The magazine has created history by completing 25 years with its unique character. From the beginning, it has been a platform for the new writers,� Deka said.
Revealing her association with Gariyoshi, writer Monalisa Saikia said the magazine�s 25-year-long journey is an era for Assamese literature, while poet Sameer Tanti said, �In Assam, running a literary magazine is a challenge and Gariyoshi faced such challenges. Hope, in coming days, it will move forward with new concepts.�
Editor of Gariyoshi Dr Lakshmi Nandan Bora recalled the contribution of the founder editor Chandra Prasad Saikia and former editor Harekrishna Deka in the magazine�s eventful journey and thanked the publishers � the Assam Tribune Group of Publications for bringing out the monthly.
A book titled Buddhadeb Dasgupta Aru Anyanya written by assistant editor of Gariyoshi Ankur Deka was also released along with another book Gariyoshi Aru Asamanya Chandraprasad, edited by Ankur Deka.
Managing director of the Assam Tribune Group of Publications Prafulla Govinda Barua and Sohini Dasgupta wife of Buddhadeb Dasgupta along with several other dignitaries were present in the programme that opened with a borgeet recital by national award winning singer Tarali Sarma.
