GUWAHATI, Dec 28 - Even before the publication of the part draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Assam Police has already registered 147 cases of submission of forged or misleading documents across the State.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is supervising 110 of the 147 cases and it has already filed chargesheet in connection with 17 cases. Further, final reports have been submitted against seven cases so far.
Official sources informed this reporter that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CID has been supervising these cases on the merit of documents and the help of forensic experts will be taken if need arises.
Sources divulged that so far the most number of cases have been registered in the areas under the Northern range where 36 cases of NRC-related forgery cases have been reported.
This is followed by the Western range with 30 cases. The Central Western range reported 21 cases, while the Central range registered 19 cases. The Southern range and Eastern range reported 10 and seven cases respectively.
�In all likelihood, the number of such cases is expected to grow further following the part publication of the NRC draft by December 31 midnight and thereafter. The ramification of these cases and the parameters of the investigation will be multi-pronged as it pertains to an attempt to illegally securing citizenship,� sources said.
�Accordingly, the arrests or detention would be made. It is an ongoing process,� sources pointed out.
Meanwhile, top Assam Police sources informed that additional companies of security forces have already been deployed in the State strategically. �The sensitive or vulnerable areas have been identified and accordingly the deployment has been done,� sources added.
