NEW DELHI, Aug 21 � In a Lok Sabha reply to a question by Rajnath Singh, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, M Ramachandran said that Government of Assam had agreed to update NRC 1951 during the meeting called to review the Assam Accord implementation.
Accordingly, the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules 2003 was amended based on modalities received from the Government of Assam for update of NRC 1951 based on relevant records. The two pilot projects for updating NRC were stopped due to law-and-order problem. The State sub-committee, which was constituted to look into the issue, has given its recommendations to the Government.
Meanwhile, at a time when the illegal infiltration from Bangladesh has assumed centre-stage, the Home Ministry has announced that an additional 383 Border Out Posts (BOPs) are proposed to be set up along the India-Bangladesh international border.
The government has adopted a multi-pronged approach for better border management, which includes infrastructures like BOPs, fencing, floodlighting, roads and also deployment of hi-tech surveillance equipment like Hand Held Thermal Imager (HHTI), Battle Field Surveillance Radars (BFSR), Long Range Reconnaissance and Observation System (LORROS) and Night Vision Devices said Minister of State of Home Affairs, M Ramachandran. The government has approved setting up of additional BOPs in February, 2009 as under.
