Centenary celebrations of Assam Textile Institute begin tomorrow

GUWAHATI, Dec 27 - Assam Textile Institute, the pioneering institute providing textile technology education in the North-east has completed 100 years of its existence.

Even though the centenary celebrations of the institute could not be started on time due to the corona pandemic, the Assam Textile Institute Centenary Celebration reception committee will kickstart the festivities on December 29 with a daylong programme, a press release issued by the Assam Textile Institute Alumni Association stated. The year-long celebrations will conclude on November 2021.

One day in the concluding ceremony will be entirely reserved for the alumni and students of the institute in which the former living in various parts of the country and abroad will come and share their work experiences and anecdotes of their association with their alma mater. Discussions on various advances in textile technology will also be organised.

Established by Raibahadur Kanaklal Barua as the Government Weaving School in 1920 under the Industry Department, it came under the Sericulture department in 1956 when its name was changed to Assam Textile Institute. In 1973, it came under the Directorate of Technical Education as a polytechnic. In addition to the three-year Textile Technology course, two diploma courses one in Fashion Technology and the other in Garment Technology were introduced in 2004.

The Association has urged all people associated with the industry, the Institute as well as stakeholders and the general public to make the centenary celebrations a success, the release added.
