Call to trace security lapse in Pulwama terror attack

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, Feb 25 - While condemning the terrorist attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama of Jammu and Kashmir, the Asom Nagorik Samaj today said that it was time to find out the lapse in the security system that led to such mayhem.

The organisation, led by a number of journalists, social activists and litterateurs, also said that no campaign promoting war and hatred should be encouraged by the people of the country and Assam. The organisation also said that any nefarious design to destroy social harmony, or political agenda to polarise people on the basis of religion must be nipped in the bud.

Addressing the media here, senior journalist and executive president of the Samaj Ajit Kumar Bhuyan said the act of terror executed by ISI-backed Jaish-e-Mohammed was not just an attack on the security forces but also an indirect assault on the Kashmiri people as it would aggravate their problems rather than solving them.

We extend our support to the government action against such outfits as they are anti-humanity. However, it must also be ascertained as to how this incident happened in a place like Kashmir, where five lakh security forces have been deployed. A thorough enquiry should be conducted on whether the standard operating procedure (SOP) for movement of security forces was followed, he added.

Making a general appeal to discourage the venomous social media campaign against the Kashmiri people, the organisation said that just like all Assamese people are not ULFA or all Naga people are not NSCN, similarly all Kashmiris are not terrorists. However, if we develop an environment of hatred and despise against the Kashmiri people, they will feel alienated from the rest of the country and the fundamentalist forces could take advantage of that, it said.

Journalist and vice president of the organisation Prashanta Rajguru and its general secretary Paresh Malakar said people should not pay attention to the contents of such media sources which have no accountability.

Social media is now flooded with unverified inflammable content that is harmful for our social fabric. People will have to segregate between the right information and baseless assertions. Following a credible media source is the only way to stay informed without being misled, mentioned Rajguru.

The organisation also flayed Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy for making inflammatory remarks after the Pulwama incident. It also said that threatening a Guwahati-based college teacher for her remarks was both unconstitutional and outrageous.
