Call to show due respect to elders

GUWAHATI, Oct 1 - World Elders� Day was observed at a meeting held today at Pensioners Bhawan, Chandmari, under the auspices of the Guwahati Senior Citizens� Association (GSCA).

Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, general secretary, Assam Senior Citizens� Association (ASCA), explained the significance of the day involving the destiny of over 800 million elderly people of the world.

Elaborating on the day�s significance, president of the meeting, DN Chakravartty said that with the development of the concept of welfare state and growth of democratic institutions, human societies throughout the world accepted the welfare of the elderly people as a guiding principle of civilised life.

Mainee Mahanta, Baneswar Khound and Eli Ahmed, in their speeches, stressed the need for the younger generation to show due respect and love to the elderly section of society.
