Terming Nehru a symbol of integration, Gogoi said he (Nehru) fought against British imperialism and laid the foundation of a modern India with pluralism and diversity as the hallmarks of the country.

He interacted with children and distributed confectionaries among them. A cultural performance by the children of Sishu Sarothi and others also marked the day. Gogoi also felicitated nine students for their achievements in different disciplines at national and international events.

APCC function: Meanwhile, the APCC today held the valedictory function of the 125th birth anniversary of Pandit Nehru in the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra auditorium.

In his speech, APCC president Anjan Dutta described Nehru as a visionary and harbinger of modern developments in India. It was because of his farsightedness that the first five IITs and the first two IIMs in the country were established during his regime, he said.
