DIBRUGARH, Jan 16 - The road construction on the upper deck of the mega rail-cum-road Bogibeel bridge is under way as slab casting and concreting is in progress in the northern bank of the river.

Although commissioning of Indias longest rail-cum-road bridge was rescheduled for March, 2018, the Construction organisation of the Northeast Frontier Railways is seeking to complete the project by 2017-end.

Our target is to complete at least the rail bridge by December this year. The construction of the road may be delayed by few months, but we are hopeful of opening the bridge to traffic by March, 2018, MK Singh, Deputy Chief Engineer, Construction, NF Railways, told newsmen at the bridge site today.

The NF Railways arranged a tour of the entire bridge project for the newsmen for an on-the-spot assessment of the construction activities. The media persons from the city here visited the construction sites at both the southern and northern ends of the bridge.

The authorities claimed to have achieved work progress of some 70 per cent. Out of 41 girders, 29 have been launched and the launching of the 30th and 31st girders is in progress. The highway road connecting the bridge at the northern bank is almost complete, while a lot remains to be done at the southern end.

The Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), which is building the bridge, has engaged some 1,500 personnel to meet the new deadline, Singh said.
