Blanket ban on firecrackers in Sikkim

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GANGTOK, Nov 5 - The Sikkim Home Department has banned bursting of all firecrackers in the State through an order issued on Wednesday.

Sikkim had earlier banned high-decibel firecrackers, but now it has clamped a blanket ban on firecrackers.

With the Diwali festival approaching, activists have been raising concerns over air and noise pollution in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan State.

Police sources said that the ban on firecrackers would be strictly implemented.

Experts have also said that firecrackers may be harmful for COVID-19 patients and others who have recovered from the infection.
