BK Dutta appointed as NEC non-official member

SHILLONG, Aug 28 - The Centre has appointed Prof Biman Kumar Dutta as the second non-official member of the North Eastern Council (NEC). Apart from the Chairman (the Union Home Minister), the Chief Ministers and Governors of the eight north-eastern States are members of the Council.

The Chairman appoints academicians to the Council as non-official members to assist the Council. In 2015, Chandra Kanta Das, retired IAS officer, and Prof Gangmumei Kamei, distinguished academician, author and public activist, were appointed as non-official members.

However, Prof Kamei passed away in 2017 and since then one of the posts of non-official members had been lying vacant.

Prof Dutta was the former Head and Dean, School of Environmental Sciences, Assam University, Silchar, Assam.
