BJPs tribal wing to contest council polls alone

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

AGARTALA, June 30 - In a surprise move, the Janajati Morcha, the tribal wing of the ruling BJP, has decided to contest the election to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) alone. This is being seen as a snub to the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), with which the BJP is running the coalition Government in the State.

Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, who is the prabhari of the Janajati Morcha, held a meeting of the BJPs tribal wing at the party headquarters, Krishnanagar, on Monday to prepare a strategy for the council elections, scheduled to be held in October.

An elaborate discussion on the organisational strength of the Janajati Morcha in the tribal areas, was held. The Tripura Deputy Chief Minister, State BJP president Dr Manik Saha, MPs Pratima Bhoumik and Rebati Tripura, and Janajati Morcha adviser Rampada Jamatia urged party workers to win the tribal council without fail.
