AGARTALA, Oct 4 - After the landslide victory in the Assembly elections early this year, the BJP has maintained its winning spree by sweeping the three-tier Panchayat by-elections in the State.

Out of the total 130 seats of Gram Panchayats, the BJP alone won 112 seats. It also emerged victorious in five out of a total of seven seats of Panchayat Samitis, according to the results declared today.

Significantly, the CPI(M) which is facing a crisis of existence after the Assembly election debacle, won two Panchayat Samity seats, according to reports available with the State Election Commission.

Earlier, the BJP had already won over 2,900 seats of Gram Panchayats, more than 120 seats of Panchayat Samitis and 12 seats of Zilla Parishads unopposed, rendering the entire by-elections insignificant.

BJP national president Amit Shah congratulated Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma on steering the party towards the clean sweep in the Panchayat by-elections.

On a Facebook post, Shah said: On the partys landslide victory in Panachayat election, I extend my full-scale greeting to the people of Tripura. And my sincere greeting to the Chief Minister and the Dy. Chief Minister.

After the stupendous victory in the Assembly elections, people have again reposed their faith in the BJP and this is due to the peoples support for the Biplab Kumar Deb-led Government, said party general secretary Rajib Bhattacharjee here today.

We were confident of winning most of the vacant seats of the three-tier Panchayat system. The results also show the peoples anger over the Marxist party that ruled the State for 25 years, he added.

Bhattacharjee also slammed the Congress, saying the people saw through the understanding between it and the CPI(M). Both have been rejected by the voters, he added.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M), in a press release, stated the rural by-election results reflect the peoples opinion against the seven-month-old BJP-IPFT Government. The anti-BJP sentiments nursed by the people must be converted into a mass movement in the days to come. The CPI(M) feels that the need of the hour is to launch a movement for job, food and immediate needs, the release added. Despite intimidations, the party did well in three blocks Panisagar, Yubarajnagar and Kalacherra, the CPI(M) release stated, adding that party candidates won two Gram Panchayat seats at Kadamtala and Gournagar RD Blocks.
