BJP poised for massive win

ITANAGAR, Dec 27 - The ruling BJP is poised for a landslide victory in panchayat polls in Arunachal Pradesh.

In the elections to the two-tier Panchayati Raj Institutions held on December 22, the BJP has bagged 179 Zilla Parishad (ZP) seats and over 6,000 Gram Panchayat (GP) seats so far as the counting of votes continue.

State Election Commission (SEC) Secretary Nyali Ete told newsmen that as per latest figures available with the commission till 5 pm today, of the total of 242 ZP seats, results of 228 have been received so far, and the BJP has secured 179 seats. Independent candidates won in 20 seats, Congress and Janata Dal (United) won in 10 seats each, National People�s Party (NPP) in six and People�s Party of Arunachal (PPA) in three.

In Gram Panchayat polls, results of 7,717 constituencies out of a total of 8,215 seats were declared. The BJP has bagged 6,062 seats, followed by Independents winning in 892 seats, Congress in 388, NPP in 199, JD(U) in 148 and PPA in 28, the Secretary informed.

Final results from four districts � Tirap, Longding, Lower Dibang Valley and Upper Subansiri � are still awaited, the election official said.
