GUWAHATI, Sept 8 - City-based Nilachal Jatiya Vidyalaya celebrated the 92nd birth anniversary of late music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika in a befitting manner on its campus.

The programme started with the lighting of the lamp before the portrait of the Sudhakantha by the school principal Rajib Kalita.

Teachers and students participated in the programme which ended with the song Aah aah ulai aah sajag janata sung by the students and teachers. Senior teacher Manashi Das hosted the programme.

Meanwhile, senior journalist DN Chakravartty has said that appropriate translation and interpretation of songs and writings of Dr Bhupen Hazarika into English and a couple of European languages could easily earn him a Nobel Prize in Literature in the same manner singer-composer Bob Dylan was awarded the coveted prize.

Chakravartty said that the significance of Dr Hazarikas music is its great humanist appeal which could touch the deeper recesses of the human heart in the way Paul Robson stirred the international audience with his soulful music.

Nowhere in contemporary Indian and international music would anyone find a parallel beauty and appeal in the way Dr Hazarikas monumental works of music transcended the barriers of times and climes, he said. He appealed to the intelligentsia of Assam to make concerted efforts to render the works of Dr Hazarika for the international audiences and critics.

Instead of eulogizing the musical genius within the territorial boundaries of Assam, the Assamese intelligentsia should make a systematic effort to make available the music of Dr Hazarika for the understanding of international critics, he added.
