GUWAHATI, Dec 26 - The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) will launch the textbook for Bihu as an elective subject for HS Second Year classes in March next year. The council has already set the process rolling by appointing a panel for compiling the book.

In the meantime, the AHSEC has released the Bihu textbook for HS First Year classes. The book titled Asomor Bihu Utsav, has been prepared by a panel of experts headed by eminent Bihu scholar Jaykanta Gandhiya who passed away recently as chief editor.

As promised, we are ready to complete the process of launching Bihu as an elective subject for HS courses before Bohag Bihu next year. The HS First Year students can opt for this paper from the current academic session. The paper will have 30 marks for theories and 70 marks for practical as per current plan, AHSEC Secretary Dr RC Chutiya said.

The decision to have Bihu as a subject at the plus two level was taken last year to make students aware about their culture and tradition. Different ethnic variants of Bihu will also be incorporated in the two-year curriculum.
