JORHAT, Feb 15 - Close on the heels of two motorcycle-borne hoodlums having snatched a bag from a businessman reportedly containing Rs 3.3 lakh in the busy Nirmal-Chariali area here, two motorcycle-borne youths in a similar manner on Thursday made an abortive attempt to snatch a bag reportedly containing Rs five lakh from a hotel employee at the busy Marwari Patty locality here.
As per eyewitness account, two persons on a motorcycle sans any registration number tried to snatch the bag said to contain a cash amount of Rs five lakh from an employee of a renowned hotel at Marwari Patty at around noon.
The employee, who had withdrawn the money from a bank in the Gar-Ali area was returning to his hotel when the duo on a motorcycle attempted to snatch the bag, but remained unsuccessful as the employee resisted the bid, thereby getting dragged for some distance by the motorcycle-borne miscreants, the witness informed.
The duo after failing to snatch the bag with cash, sped away from the spot in view of the employee raising an alarm.
It may be mentioned here that on February 6 last, two motorcycle-borne men in a similar manner snatched a bag containing Rs 3.3 lakh from Promode Agarwal, a businessman from Sarupathar in Golaghat district, who came here to purchase goods from the wholesale market.
On January 13 in a similar incident, two motorcycle-borne youths snatched a bag containing Rs 4 lakh from a Government employee identified as Karna Deka at Rajabari area in front of the Jorhat District Transport Office.
It may be mentioned here that frequent incidents of snatching by motorcycle-borne miscreants in the town have occurred with alarming regularity since last year and is steadily on the rise.
In January last year, Jorhat Police had installed 32 CCTV cameras in different strategic locations of the town under a project to assist in curbing crime, but most of the cameras are presently out of order, a police source revealed.
