AIZAWL, May 25 - The Young Mizo Association of Kawrthah along with staff of the DFO are making frantic attempts to save the lives of six severely wounded trees on the roadside between Kawrthah and Tuidam in western Mizoram.
The trunks of six mature trees on the roadside were found deeply cut with an axe a few days back in an apparent bid to let them die gradually.
On Saturday, volunteers of YMA in Kawrthah along with the DFO and his staff made efforts to heal the wounds by filling the cuts with dirt and bandaging them. It is hoped that the wounds will gradually heal, though chances are low, according to experts.
According to Mizoram-based Association for Environment Protection (ASEP), the culprit behind the wounded trees was the wife of a district horticulture officer, who has apologised for her action, which is an offence under the Mizoram (Forests) Act, 1955.
Sources said the accused is planting betel nuts in the area and feared that the trees, if not felled, would hamper the growth of betel nuts. The trees are estimated to be 30 to 35 years old.
