DIBRUGARH, March 28 � The city-based non-government organisation, Policy Group For Peoples� Rights, has hailed the Chief Minister for the reported Budget allocation for preservation of the building in which Sir John Berry White started his medical school here.
Assam Medical College was formally established on November 3, 1947 at Dibrugarh. It was, however, earlier known as Dr John Berry White Medical School, which was established in 1902. It has the distinction of being the first medical college in the entire north-eastern region of India.
Policy Group For Peoples� Rights expressed heartfelt thanks to the Chief Minister for responding to their request and fulfilling a heartfelt wish of the Dibrugarh public for preserving the memory of a great man who has contributed so enormously for the welfare of the people of Assam, Dr Aradhana Kataki, president, Policy Group For Peoples� Rights stated.
