BCPL hopes to go on stream next year

DIBRUGARH, June 5 � The Assam gas cracker project at Lepetkata near here is crawling towards completion and the petrochemical plant, which has been named as Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), should be able to commence production early next year, claimed Prabhu Nath Prasad, Managing Director of the BCPL, today.

The mechanical completion of the plant may be achieved by August this year, Prasad added.

�As soon as commissioning is over by August, we will go for polymer production. So far everything is progressing well. We will require a minimum of six months after commissioning the unit to start production,� he told newsmen here today.

About the marketing plan, the Managing Director said GAIL (India) Limited had proposed selling a major part of the BCPL products outside the North East region. As per the marketing plan of GAIL, BCPL products was to be moved to all the geographic zones of the country. Prasad said that BCPL had rejected the marketing plan and suggested that the marketing department identify consumers within the northeastern region. Currently, there is hardly any market for polymers in the North East.

On the progress of the project, the Managing Director said mechanical completion of 1st stream of utilities and offsite, compressor station and GDU, Duliajan and GSU and C2+recovery unit was achieved and would be commissioned next month. The commissioning activities for nitrogen system has already been started and is expected to be completed by this month. As of now, the Raw Water System, Fire Water System, plant air and Instrument Air Systems have been partially commissioned, he added.
