Attacks on journalists condemned

GUWAHATI, Dec 11 - Former member of the Press Council of India, K Amarnath, has condemned regular attacks on journalists saying that these heinous acts create an environment of self-censorship in media which is harmful to democracy.

Attending a workshop-cum-seminar organised on Sunday at Dispur Press Club here, he said only unity among mediapersons can build resistance against attacks on freedom of expression.

The workshop-cum-seminar was organised by Journalists� Union of Assam in association with State committee of Association of Small & Medium Newspapers of India and Journalists� Federation of Assam.

Speaking on the occasion, Additional DGP (SB) Pallab Bhattacharya said that coordination between the police and mediapersons is important in preserving media rights, stated a press release.
