Assam win 4 gold on penultimate day

GUWAHATI, Jan 21 - Assam clinched as many as four gold medals on the penultimate day of the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games.

Shivangi Sarma added one more gold to raise her gold medal tally to five. At the Dr Zakir Hussain Aquatic Centre in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here today, Shivangi won gold in 50m freestyle. Milanton S Dutta (bronze in 50m breaststroke) and Anubhuti Baruah (bronze in 200m butterfly) wee the other swimmers to win medals for Assam today.

Assam tennis pair of Parikshit Somani and Sheikh Md Iftikhar won gold in boys U-21 category defeating Shashank Macherla and Sai Karteek Reddy of Telangana in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

In lawn bowling, Assam bagged two more gold medals in mixed pair and triple. The doubles pair team comprised Suman Kumari Pandey and Abhishek Handique while the members of triple team were Adinita Kakoti, Scion Shiv Mahanta and Surajit Buragohain. Assam created a record by winning seven gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. Previously no team could win such number of medals in any national championship.

Isha Rani Baruah and Ankita Gogoi won a silver medal in badminton doubles.

The boxing medal winners were � Aikon Mili (silver in 52kg), Pranta Ghatowar (silver in 57kg), Karamveer Phogat (silver in 70kg).

In the U-17 boys football final at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium today, Assam went down to Mizoram by a solitary goal. Lalpek Tulunga scored the match winning goal in the 36th minute. Following a flag kick unmarked Lalpek volleyed home from inside the box.

Assam boys also fought equally but could not hit the target.
