GUWAHATI, Nov 19 � The governments of Assam and Nagaland have agreed to take effective steps to maintain peace along the inter-state border. Meanwhile, the Assam government has requested Nagaland to apprehend the culprits involved in the recent incidents of violence.
At a meeting between Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla and his Nagaland counterpart Toshi Aiyer, both sides agreed to make efforts for creation of a conducive atmosphere for restoration of harmonious relations among the people and for the safe and early return of the displaced people to their respective villages. The Government of Nagaland was also requested to assist in apprehending the culprits responsible for the incidents of violence, said an official release.
The Chief Secretaries, accompanied by senior officials of home, political and border areas departments of the respective states, met at the Secretariat here on November 17 to discuss the prevailing situation along the border. The meeting was held in pursuance of the decision taken during the meeting of the Union Home Minister with the Chief Ministers of both the states in New Delhi on October 27.
MGVK Bhanu, Principal Secretary, State Home & Political Department, briefed the meeting on the prevailing law-and-order situation following the attack on November 13 in Uriamghat area in Golaghat district. One person was killed and three others injured when unidentified miscreants opened fire on the farmers harvesting in the area. Over 200 persons are taking shelter in relief camps at Uriamghat following the incident. GD Tripathi, State Commissioner & Secretary, Revenue Department, briefed the meeting on the identification of the border between the two states in the light of the recent ruling of the Supreme Court in the matter.
The meeting also decided both the States would take measures to defuse the current tense situation in the area and cooperate in curbing activities of militants and miscreants. It was reiterated that such mischievous elements should not be allowed to create misunderstanding among the people.
