Asam Sahitya Sabha announces poll schedule

GUWAHATI, Sept 22 - The Asam Sahitya Sabha today announced the schedule for the elections to the posts of its president, vice president and general secretary for a two-year term from 2020 to 2022.

The elections will be held under the supervision of a three-member committee comprising former judge of Gauhati High Court Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma as the chief election officer and senior advocates Bijon Kumar Mahajan and SP Roy as the members.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mahajan said that the model code of conduct for the elections came into force today and would remain in force till the election process was over.

He further informed that the nomination forms for the three posts will be available at the Sabha�s central office in Jorhat from September 24 to 28.

One will have to pay Rs 1,000 for one nomination form. An aspiring candidate will have to show the support of at least 25 life members at the time of collecting the nomination form.

Nominations will be received at the Sabha�s administrative office here from 11 am to 2 pm on October 3 and 4. The last date for withdrawal of nomination is October 7. For withdrawal of nomination, the candidate will have to write to the chief election officer along with the signatures of at least ten of his supporters.

From November 1, the election committee will send ballot papers to every district and branch committee through post and from that day itself the voting process will start. The process will culminate on December 10.

The counting of votes will take place on December 15 in the presence of general public and journalists. The Sabha ruled that along with the nomination form every candidate would have to enclose their bio-data and the copies of the bio-data will be sent to the district and branch committees.

The election committee has restricted canvassing in any form for any candidates.
