ITANAGAR, April 29 - State Election Commission, Arunachal Pradesh has decided to cancel the election to Itanagar and Pasighat Municipal Councils, which was scheduled to be held in May, in view of ensuing monsoon- related disasters.

The election to the Municipalities of Itanagar and Pasighat stands deferred till end of the monsoon season, reads the SEC order yesterday, issued by its Secretary Kanto Danggen.

As the current term of both the Municipalities is ending on May 31, the poll schedule for the civic bodies was announced on April 20 last. The election was slated to be held on May 29. While the date for election notification was May 1, counting of votes was to take place on May 31 and results declaration scheduled on June 7 next.

Prior to cancellation of the polls, the SEC was in receipt of a letter on April 23 from the State Government submitting that the election has been announced during monsoon season when the chances of landslides and natural disaster are quite high and requested for deferment of election.

Basing on the submission of the State Government, SEC sought reports from Deputy Commissioners-cum-Municipal Election Officers of Itanagar and Pasighat Municipalities, who, in turn, agreed with the government proposal.
