SILCHAR, June 27 - In a bid to narrow down the gap between the farmers with the market and consumers, the North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited (NERAMAC) has taken an initiative to procure pineapples from Cachar and sell the produce in the State.

A release issued by NERAMAC informed that a total of 5 MT pineapple had been procured from the Hmar Organic Food Producer, a farmer producer company located at Hmarkhawlien in Lakhipur subdivision of the district on June 23.

The consignment was taken to Guwahati and sold in retail outlets at prominent locations across the city from June 24, the release said.

NERAMAC had initially planned to sell the consignment at the wholesale market of Fancy Bazaar. But, owing to the Governments latest announcement to initiate a ward wise lockdown due to a spike in the number of Covid-19 cases in the city including Fancy Bazar, we had to resort to an alternative plan. To overcome the situation, we started selling the fruit through retail stalls at various prominent locations of the city from June 24. We have been providing market linkages to the farmers by procuring their produces at a remunerative price thereby bridging the gap between the farmers and the market and subsequent end consumers, the release said.

Further, it has also been mentioned in the release that amidst the pandemic, NERAMAC has urged the wholesale traders, retailers, voluntary bodies, NGOs, resident associations and individuals to step up and support the efforts to help the farmer friends who are struggling to find buyers for their produces at good prices to support their families.
