AKRSU bandh passes off peacefully

BONGAIGAON, Sept 20 - The 12-hour Assam bandh called by the All Koch Rajbongshi Students� Union (AKRSU) passed off peacefully in Bongaigaon and Chirang districts today.

Exclusion of the names of a large number of Koch Rajbongshi people from the NRC list was a �conspiracy� as per the leaders of All Koch Rajbongshi Students� Union.

Picketers burnt tyres on the main roads in protest against the �conspiracy� by which many Koch Rajbongshi citizens were deprived of their rights to get included in the NRC list.

The leaders of the student group have demanded that the government include the Koch Rajbongshi citizens in the NRC list by a fresh process.

At Kokrajhar: The 12-hour Assam bandh called by the AKRSU in protest against exclusion of a large number of Koch Rajbongshi people from the final list of NRC and demanding unconditional inclusion of the names of indigenous people in the NRC today evoked mixed response in Kokrajhar district.

The bandh had partial impact in Kokrajhar town as all the educational and financial institutions functioned normally. However, shops and business establishments remained closed while the bandh was total in the Koch Rajbongshi-dominated areas of the district.

At Gauripur: The 12-hour Assam bandh called by the AKRSU, Chilarai Sena, Mahila Samiti in protest against the non-inclusion of names in the NRC published on August 31, evoked partial response in greater Gauripur areas. Commercial establishments, fish and vegetables market were closed. Schools and other private institutions however remained open. Financial institutions and post offices were closed. Trucks and long-distance buses were seen off the NH 31. The bandh passed of peacefully. The bandh was successful in Golokganj area.

At Gossaigaon: The 12-hour Assam bandh called by the All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students� Union got full response at Gossaigaon subdivision. All business establishments were closed. All government offices and financial institutions were closed. However, the SDO (C) office at Habrubil functioned with thin attendance. Plying of traffic on roads was totally paralysed. The NH 31(C) passing through Gossaigaon was deserted.

At Morigaon: Normal life was paralysed here at Morigaon district today, due to the 12-hour Assam bandh called by the All Koch Rajbongshi Students� Union (AKRSU) protesting against the non-inclusion of the majority of the names of Koch Rajbongshi people from the NRC.

All shops and business establishments remain closed while vehicles stayed off the roads. The banks and insurance companies also remained closed in the district . Police dispersed the mob of bandh supporters who had blocked the Jagiroad-Morigaon Road at several places. However, on National Highway 37, the vehicular traffic was normal with the vigil of the police and security forces.

On the other hand, hundreds of people under the banner of the All Assam Bengali Yuva Chatra Federation staged a dharna in front of Morigaon DC court protesting against the non-inclusion of bonafide Indian citizens in NRC. They handed over a memorandum to the DC, Morigaon addressed to the Chief Minister, Assam.
