AGP should make stand clear on ties with BJP-led State Govt

GUWAHATI, Jan 17 - The Forum Against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill today asked the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to make its stand clear on its alliance with the BJP-led State government.

President of the forum Dr Hiren Gohain said that even though the AGP leadership has formally announced snapping of all ties with the BJP after widespread protests in the State against the Bill, the partys stand is still not very clear on the issue. Grassroots-level workers of the AGP and people of Assam in general welcomed the move of the regional party and hoped that the movement against this anti-Assam Bill would gain more strength. However, it is seen that the AGP has still not come out of the government, which is creating confusion among the people. It is not appropriate for the regional party to have any doubts about the actual intentions of the BJP, he added.

On the other hand, its heartening to note that some of the MLAs of the BJP are opposing the Bill as they are concerned about the future of the State and its people. We hope that they will register their stronger protest against the Bill in the days to come and hope that other MLAs and BJP members would reconsider their roles in this hour of crisis, the forum added.
