GUWAHATI, Feb 19 - The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today said the party was resolute against granting citizenship to any illegal migrant entering Assam after the cutoff date as per the Assam Accord.

The regional party that came out of the BJP-led ruling alliance in the State over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill row today reiterated that any illegal migrant from Bangladesh, including the Hindu Bangladeshis, would never be accepted as citizens by the people of Assam at any cost.

The NRC update work in Assam was the result of a prolonged movement by the people of Assam. For us, the matter of securing the culture and identity of the indigenous people is of paramount importance. However, some vested interest groups are trying to undermine the significance of this mammoth exercise and impose some unacceptable decisions on the people of Assam, AGP general secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita said.

The AGP will hold its central executive meeting tomorrow where issues like citizenship Bill and NRC update would be discussed along with the regional partys strategy for the coming Lok Sabha elections. It may be noted that State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass yesterday indicated that his party did not want an alliance with the regional party for the coming election.

Those trying to violate the Assam Accord and override the cutoff date of March 25, 1971 must understand that people of the entire State are with us over the issue. The recent public movement was just an example of this, Kalita added.
