The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has warned of �imposition of heavy environmental compensation� apart from �other coercive orders� against the Government of Assam in case the latter fails to hand over the plots of land identified for the purpose of integrated solid waste treatment plant (ISWTP) and decentralised processing plant (DPP) to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) within one month from February 11, 2020.
The NGT order came in the wake of the submission made by GMC counsel Santanu Bora before it. Bora said that delay on the part of the State government to hand over the land identified for the above purposes has resulted in the delay in setting up the DPP, in connection with the Original Application No 472/2018 [ IA No 37/20190 {Earlier Original Application No 19/2014 (EZ)}], Rohit Choudhury versus Union of India and Others.
The State government had on November 7, 2019, said that four plots of land had been identified for setting up decentralised processing plants so that the practice of dumping of Guwahati�s municipal solid waste (MSW) at the existing dumping site located at Boragaon could be done away with.
The State government said that one of the plots measuring 40 bighas, identified for the purpose is located on the campus of the old Chandrapur Thermal Power Station of the Assam Power Generation Corporation Ltd (APGCL). The second plot identified for the purpose measuring 27 bighas, is located at Tamulikuchi under Sonapur mouza, the third plot measuring 20 bighas, is located at Odalbakra under Beltola mouza and the fourth plot measuring 37 bighas, 3 kathas, 5 lessas, is located at village Basistha under Beltola mouza.
