ACS officer among 2 convicted for graft

GUWAHATI, Dec 30 - A CBI court has convicted an ACS officer and a junior engineer for misappropriating government funds of the MGNREGA scheme in Dima Hasao district. Both have been sentenced to one year simple imprisonment and a fine.

Accused Jayanta Sarkar was then BDO of Diyungbra development block and Anjan Hafila was a junior engineer there.

They had forged documents like muster rolls, cash memos and made false entries to misappropriate government funds under the scheme in 2006-07. They had misappropriated funds to the tune of Rs 35.45 lakh.

Special CBI Judge Mahendra Kalita said in his order that the prosecution has proved beyond doubt that the accused had committed the crime and the evidences were �consistent and coherent�.

Various construction works were shown to be done on paper though in reality no construction took place. The firm which supplied various materials also did not exist.
