SILCHAR, July 12 - All India Mahila Congress chief and former Congress MP from Silchar, Susmita Dev has reiterated the demand of the people of Barak Valley for posting of cardiologist and neurologist at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).

In her letter to Sameer Sinha, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Health, Government of Assam on Sunday, Dev said, many lives have been lost due to lack of specialised cardiologist and neurologist here. After the death of a youth named Sayantan Chakraborty in October 2019 owing to lack of a specialised doctors for angioplasty, people of Silchar raised voice for a neurologist and cardiologist for which they received positive assurances.

In March this year, following intervention of Padmashree Dr R Ravi Kannan, a cardiovascular surgeon and Dr P Gopal, who visited the SMCH and agreed to treat patients here under some conditions, a proposal underlining the situation is awaiting approval from the Department of Health. I echo the demand of the people of this valley to make arrangement for brining Dr Gopal even as a visiting doctor on a regular basis, which would give a huge relief to the masses here.
